Women in Planning Series: Putting Women and Gender Diverse People on the Map

Putting Women and Gender Diverse People on the Map: Victoria’s Leadership in Inclusive Place Naming and Public Art

Part of the Women in Planning Lunch & Learn Series, this session is one of eight nationally delivered events bringing together insights from Women in Planning Networks across Australia.

Each session is led by a different network and designed to explore topics that resonate across the profession offering practical takeaways, shared experiences and the chance to connect with peers nationwide.

Victoria is leading the nation in reshaping how public spaces recognise and celebrate women and gender diverse people. Through bold state policy, clear targets, dedicated investment and strong partnerships with local government, the development sector and community advocates, the state is closing the historic “commemorative gap” in place naming and public art.

With 68% of new commemorative place names in 2025 honouring women, up from just 26% in 2022,  Victoria demonstrates how planning, urban design and policy can drive lasting cultural change. This case study highlights the impact of the Put Her Name On It initiative, showcases local government leadership, and explores the critical role planners play in embedding equity into the stories our places tell.
Discover how inclusive place-making is shaping more representative, equitable and meaningful public environments across Victoria and the role you can play to Put Her Name on It.

As co-founder of the Put Her Name on It Campaign, Kerry spearheaded the first coordinated effort in the nation to tackle women’s invisibility in public commemoration and was also the co-founded SheQual (formerly Advertising [in]Equality Project), Women in Gippsland network and led the Finding Her Women’s Commemorative Tour.
Kerry has guided dozens of organisations and delivered masterclasses and workshops for hundreds of people, building capability and creating a lasting legacy of equality-driven leadership.
Wandering around this beautiful world and learning about people and places is one of her big loves along side hiking and burying her nose into women's centred historical fiction.
