Event Outline
This Planning in Focus session is designed to equip Urban Planners and Local and State Government planning practitioners with a clear, practical understanding of their legal obligations in relation to Aboriginal heritage in South Australia. The session provides a focused overview of the key legislative frameworks governing heritage protection, land use, and Indigenous rights, including the Aboriginal Heritage Act 1988 (SA), Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Heritage Protection Act 1984 (Cth), and the recent amendment to section 12 and the objects of the Planning, Development, and Infrastructure Act 2016 (SA).
Participants will gain insight into how these laws intersect in planning and development contexts, with particular attention to statutory duties, compliance risks, and decision making responsibilities. The training also explores the principles and practice of meaningful consultation, including Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC), and how to engage respectfully and effectively with Aboriginal communities and Traditional Owners.
Through practical examples and case based discussion, attendees will develop the confidence to identify when heritage considerations arise, understand approval pathways, and integrate culturally appropriate processes into project planning. This session is ideal for professionals seeking to strengthen governance, reduce legal risk, and support culturally informed, lawful development outcomes.
