About

Join us for this annual full-day PLANET held at the South Australian Country Fire Service (CFS) State Headquarters in Keswick. Designed for planners at all career stages, this immersive course strengthens expertise in integrating bushfire risk management with land-use planning. Participants gain hands-on exposure to firefighting equipment, as well as a VR bushfire experience developed by the University of South Australia and CFS.

 

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand the interplay between the SA planning system and CFS bushfire safety principles.
  • Gain insights into bushfire behavior, firefighting techniques, and their implications for planning.
  • Explore frameworks and other tools for bushfire-prone areas.
  • Review recent bushfire events to understand building performance and lessons learned.

 

Designed for: Planners involved in development assessment or policy development across government, councils, and the private sector, seeking to deepen their understanding of bushfire-resilient planning.

Presenters 

  Leah Bertholini, Manager - Development Assessment, SA Country Fire Service

Leah has worked in the South Australian Country Fire Service (SA CFS) since August 2012, her primary role and expertise have been as a Bushfire Safety Officer (Residential), performing development assessments for dwellings, tourist accommodation and other habitable buildings located in areas mapped as Bushfire Prone across the state of South Australia. Leah currently is Manager of the Development Assessment Service (DAS) within SA CFS which also includes Building Fire Safety and Alarms.

Leah represents the SA CFS on the Bushfire Standards Technical Group (BEPTG-Bushfire) facilitated by the Australasian Fire and Emergency Service Authorities Council (AFAC). As well as providing comments on strategic planning and building directions for Bushfire Prone Areas in South Australia.

Her commitment to professional development saw Leah achieving Certificate III Public Safety (Firefighting Operations) with a view to complete further training in Incident Management and Graduate certificate for Bushfire Protection for developments in Bushfire Prone Areas.
