Early bird registrations now open!
We are thrilled to announce that the 2026 Qld State Conference will be held in Cairns.
Like many parts of Queensland, Cairns is experiencing rapid growth and change. This underscores the importance of strong collaboration across the wider industry to address key challenges while safeguarding our shared values. Planners, especially those in the regions, recognise that issues such as climate risk, housing affordability, infrastructure demands, and balancing environmental and social priorities require collective solutions.
2026 Qld Conference Theme:
Beyond Planning: Building Resilient Futures Through Collaboration
This theme recognises that today’s planning challenges—climate risk, housing unaffordability, infrastructure constraints, and complex environmental and social pressures—cannot be addressed by planners working in isolation. Instead, it calls for integrated, cross-disciplinary approaches that bring together planners with engineers, designers, policy-makers, certifiers, engagement specialists and other allied professionals.
Conference program is structured around the following 3 sub-themes:
|

Sub-theme 1
Plausible Futures: Navigating Risk and Uncertainty
|

Sub-theme 2
Bridging Acts: From Planning to Implementation
|

Sub-theme 3
Collaborative Solutions for a Constrained Future

Study Tour 1 -10.30am-2.30pm - Hands on Country Eco Tour
Your tour departs Cairns Marina, cruising through Trinity Inlet and up Hills Creek, bordered by lush mangrove forests. Depending on tide conditions, there may be opportunities to spot estuarine crocodiles. The tour provides access to an Indigenous Protected Area—one of only 82 in Australia—showcasing a rejuvenated tropical landscape rich in fish and bird life.
At the Yulu (Stingray) Shelter, participants will learn about Indigenous land use planning and the opportunities and challenges involved. A short bus transfer then takes the group to a working Indigenous Ranger base and the start of the Mayi Bugan Rainforest Trail. Guided by Indigenous rangers, the walk explores native foods, bush medicines, and enduring cultural traditions. Light refreshments or lunch are enjoyed in the rainforest before returning to Cairns Marina.

Study Tour 2 -10.30am-2.30pm - Saltwater Creek Catchment Resilience Master Plan
This half-day bus tour departs from the Pullman Cairns International.
The tour explores the Saltwater Creek Catchment, a vital urban water system flowing through Cairns via Saltwater Creek, Lily Creek and Hamliffe Creek. The catchment supports mangroves, wetlands and riparian corridors that provide important services such as flood mitigation, water filtration and wildlife habitat, and holds deep cultural significance for the Gimuy Walubara Yidinji and Yirrganydji peoples.
Participants will learn about the Saltwater Creek Catchment Resilience Master Plan, developed collaboratively to improve the health, function and climate resilience of this evolving urban landscape. Presentations will be provided by representatives from Cairns Regional Council, OzFish, Cairns Airport and Ports North, covering catchment restoration, urban regeneration, blue carbon initiatives and adaptation planning.
Site visits include Centenary Lakes and a Lily Creek revegetation site, with lunch provided at Centenary Lakes.
