PLANET ACT | ACT Planning 101

ACT Planning 101 is a comprehensive full-day course designed to equip planners, developers, and policy advisers with a thorough understanding of the ACT's planning framework. Facilitated by Natalia Anderson RPIA, ACT PIA President, and Associate Director at Gyde Consulting, this interactive course explores governance structures, land tenure systems, and the intricacies of development applications, including lease variations.

Participants will engage in hands-on activities, case studies, and practical exercises, fostering a deeper understanding of the ACT's planning principles and processes.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the ACT Planning Framework: Explain the roles and interactions of government departments and planning authorities in the ACT, including their impact on development applications and urban planning.
  • Start to Navigate Key Planning Documents: Identify and apply relevant policies, design guides, and assessment requirements from the National Capital Plan and Territory Plan.
  • Start to Prepare Development Applications: Outline the necessary components of a Development Application, including mandatory documents, and navigate the submission and approval process effectively.
  • Start to understand Land Tenure and Lease Variations: Analyse and draft lease variation requests, understanding the implications of Crown leases and associated lease variation charges.
  • Apply Planning Knowledge to Real-World Scenarios: Demonstrate proficiency in addressing planning challenges through case studies, mock exercises, and Q&A sessions.

Designed for

Planners, developers, and policy advisors who have little to no knowledge of the ACT Planning system.

Natalia Anderson RPIA, PIA ACT President, Gyde Consulting

Natalia is an Urbanist and Town Planner based in Canberra, Australia. She works on a wide variety of planning consultancy matters including development applications, lease variations, DA project management, due diligence assessments and community consultations throughout Canberra, the ACT, and surrounding NSW. She has worked in Aviation and undertaken Development Planning and Environmental Management on Federally Leased Airport Land.

Natalia was the National Young Planner Director for the Planning Institute of Australia 2018-2020 and was the 2017 Planning Institute of Australia's ACT Young Planner of the Year.
