PLANET ACT | Skills you need to be an effective expert witness

Do you want to be a competent and confident expert witness? This half-day workshop examines relevant law and practice, drawing on real life practical experiences. The workshop focuses on practice primarily in the ACT Civil and Administrative Tribunal covering preparation and delivery of expert evidence in administrative review of Territory Planning Authority decisions.
 
Learning Outcomes
In this workshop, you will gain an understanding of:
 
The legislative and policy framework which sets the roles of expert witnesses;
How to prepare expert witness statements;
Working effectively with lawyers and other experts;
Preparation for and delivery of oral evidence; and
Key cases which help to define the roles of expert witnesses and how their evidence is treated.
 
Designed For
Town planners, urban designers and other specialists who provide expert advice on planning matters which may come before the Tribunal.

Presenters

Alisa Taylor has 20 years’ experience in property and construction disputes in Canberra and surrounds.  She frequently acts for developers, and home owners, in relation to disputes with the Territory about planning approvals and property taxes such as lease variation charges and rates.  Her team has an impressive track record in resolving disputes early, and preserving the feasibility of the project. 

 

Kate Hetherington, Special Counsel at MV Law has close to a decade of experience in property and planning disputes. With a strong base of experience in administrative law matters (and particularly review of decisions made by the Territory Planning Authority and Commissioner for ACT Revenue), she combines deep legal expertise, her practical outcomes-focussed approach and effective collaboration with consultants to achieve favourable outcomes for clients.
